Musings: High Speed Pursuit of Life

I recently had the honor to ride along with an instructor for a defensive driving class. The instructor was amazing in his ability to control the vehicle all while he calmly discussed his actions and the reason for them. Since then, I've found that each of these skills can apply to everyone.

Lunch Time Entertainment

One of my spousal duties is teacher's assistant which includes grading papers on occasion, technical support, and assignment ideas. Once, for a chemistry assignment, I took a Hot Wheels semi-truck and destroyed it so that it looked like it crashed. In class the students took samples of the spilled powder and determined what it was (toxic chemicals or the ingredients for cake mix!).

New Idea: Digital Flash Clock

With the resetting of clocks in the household complete, I am now faced with the harder reset of my children's internal clocks. Despite what the digital clock on my side-board says, my children still get up at the same relative time. Dude it's only 4AM PST! You need to sleep at least another hour. On the other hand, it was grandiose when they went to bed an hour 'early'!

All of this time talk got me thinking. Why does my alarm clock have a battery any longer?

The Dancing Spider Screen Saver

As an IT guy, I find that I typically use things differently than others. I use keystrokes more than the mouse. I prefer command-line tools instead of graphical (typically). I script instead of gathering info manually. One thing, I noticed, is that I also do my screen saver differently. OK, not really that different, but it's really how I use the built-in Windows XP screen saver.

It's time for Nocturnal!

Nocturnal coverScott Sigler's latest horror novel released yesterday! Nocturnal. I suggest that you check it out! His last novels were edge-of the seat thrilling (and scary). This one sounds a bit different based on discussions by Scott. He said he always wanted to invent a new monster, not a vampire, not a werewolf, but equally scary.

Check it out, see what you think..

Are you preparing for the 2008 Games?

If you've read my site for any time, you know that I am a big-time scripter. I look for scripted solutions to most common problems that I have to deal with first. Touch 1,200 accounts by hand? Write a script? Hmmm.. If I cannot find a viable (scripted) solution within 15 minutes of googling, then I might ping a friend or co-worker and see if they've done something similar, but likely go for the manual method.

My (Fixed - term) Mortgage Calculator

My wife and I were recently considering the purchase of a new home in our area. We went through a million what-if scenarios about the new home, laying out the pros and cons of the house, or current place and all the financial concerns involved.

While running all the numbers, I was constantly faced with numerous calculations. Going out to a mortgage calculator wasn't always the favorable solution. That is why I worked up this Excel spreadsheet to calculate various scenarios (what if our house sold of 10% more? What if we qualified for a 45year fixed loan? what if we paid off the car? )

My Home Disaster Recovery Plan

I was just reading through another news article about the fires in Southern California. The article was discussing the displaced families that were returning home for the first time. The focus family found that they had unfortunately returned to a burnt out shell of a home.

This Sunday is NOT the end of DST

Several years ago, I bought a great atomic clock. The dual alarms allow me to set one for weekdays, and a different (if any) for weekends. It will automatically synchronize itself with the atomic clock, so no worries about the correct time, except...

Build your own website for only pennies a day
