This last year has seen a lot of changes in our household. We started 2007 with a wonderful Monterey vacation only to return to a pink slip. I then spent the next 7 months hopping between one short term contract position to another. August I started a long-term contract that I have been enjoying.
During that time, my son turned 1 (now 21 months) and my daughter turned 5. My son is a bundle of energy. We have had to put magnetic safety locks on several cabinets since he figured out how to open the basic lever ones. He enjoys climbing up on things, including the kitchen table and counters, dressers, and any other low furniture. Over the last few weeks, we've started hearing advanced signs of speech with short, slurred sentences, like "where-d'-go?" and "look it", beyond the "daddy", "doggy" and "ball". Despite his lack of speaking, he is quite verbal in a non-verbal sense. Want milk? Climb the fridge. Want pacifier? point to counter where we keep them. Want Teletubbies? Dance in front of the TV. If you're not paying attention, he will grab your finger and pull you with him. His 'teachers' (aka daycare providers) say he is quite the class-clown, having fun at school and knowing when to laugh at their jokes!
This September, my daughter started an accelerated Kindergarten class at a local private school. It's tough for her, but she seems to be enjoying the classes. She is able to read to the level of Dr. Seuss books and is doing simple math. In addition, she surprises me with tidbits of Spanish, "Daddy, como estas?" and singing songs I've never heard. She is also participating in Daisy Scouts, ballet classes and even played a minor part in the school play (she was a singing Christmas tree)!
As I look forward to 2008, I hope to find many wonderful presents under the tree. My daughter is looking to possibly performing in another play. My son should be able to say his name by his birthday. I hope to get a permanent position with my current contract! If that's not enlightening enough, make sure to check out the light show tonight. NASA is claiming tonight to be one of the best nights to view the moon and Mars in several years.
Happy New Year!
